Early Intervention & Late Talkers

Some children take longer to start talking or don’t develop as many words as expected for their age. This page outlines signs to look for in early communication, what may indicate a delay, and how early intervention can support your child’s speech and language development from the start.

CONTACT US

What is a Late Talker?

A “late talker” is a child (typically aged 18 months to 2 years) who has good understanding of language and age-appropriate play skills, but is using fewer spoken words than expected for their age. They may point, gesture, and show strong social interest, but their spoken vocabulary is limited. Some late talkers catch up on their own, but others benefit from early support to prevent ongoing language difficulties.

Is a Language Delay the Same as a Late Talker?

Not quite. While both involve slower-than-expected language development, they are different.

A late talker typically has age-appropriate understanding (comprehension) and play skills but is using fewer spoken words than expected. In contrast, a language delay usually means a child is experiencing difficulties in both understanding and using language.

Children with broader language delays may find it harder to follow instructions, understand stories, or express themselves clearly — and often need more ongoing support. A speech pathologist can help determine whether your child is a late talker or showing signs of a wider language delay, and guide you on the best next steps..

Does My Child Need Speech Pathology?

If you’re concerned about your child’s language development — even if others say “wait and see” — it’s always worth checking in. A speech pathologist can help determine whether your child’s communication is within typical limits or if support would be helpful. Early assessment doesn’t mean there’s something wrong — it’s a way to get clarity and support your child’s development.

Will My Child Catch Up?

Some late talkers do catch up on their own, but others may continue to experience difficulties with language, literacy, and learning later on. It’s difficult to predict which children will catch up without support — that’s why early intervention is so important. The earlier we act, the more we can support strong communication foundations and positive outcomes for your child.

What Does Early Intervention Look Like?

Early intervention is tailored to your child’s age, interests, and developmental needs. For toddlers and young children, therapy is often play-based and focused on building connection, interaction, and meaningful communication. A big part of early intervention also involves coaching parents — giving you simple, effective strategies to use at home, during everyday routines and play.
