Reading & Literacy Intervention

Reading & Literacy Intervention

If you’re concerned about your child’s reading, spelling, or literacy development, you’re not alone. This page provides an overview of how we support children with literacy difficulties, what signs to look out for, and how early intervention can build strong foundations for reading and learning.

CONTACT US

How Do Speech Pathologists Help With Literacy?

Speech pathologists are experts in both spoken and written language. We work with children who need extra support to develop the building blocks of reading and writing, from phonological awareness and phonics to comprehension and written expression.

We often work 1:1 or in small groups, and collaborate closely with teachers, learning support staff, and families to ensure a consistent approach across settings.

Many children with literacy difficulties also have underlying language challenges, and our training allows us to support both together for the best outcomes.

Which Children Are More Likely to Have Difficulties With Reading & Writing?

Some children are more likely to experience challenges with reading, spelling, or written expression. These include children who have:

  • A history of temporary or permanent hearing loss, including recurrent ear infections (glue ear)
  • Experienced speech sound difficulties or language delays in early childhood
  • Attention or focus difficulties, such as ADHD
  • A family history of reading, spelling, or learning difficulties
  • Ongoing challenges with processing spoken language

Recognising these risk factors early means we can provide the right support to help your child build strong literacy foundations and prevent them from falling behind.

How Do I Know If My Child’s Reading, Writing or Spelling Is On Track?

Your child’s teacher is often a great starting point. They can provide insight into how your child is tracking compared to grade expectations. You can also refer to the NSW English K–2 Instructional Sequence for a clear outline of expected phonics knowledge and reading milestones.

If you have concerns, we can complete a comprehensive assessment and help you understand your child’s current skills, identify any gaps, and recommend next steps.

What About Learning Difficulties Like Dyslexia & Dysgraphia?

Children who experience ongoing challenges with reading or writing may meet criteria for a specific learning disability in reading or writing, terms now used in place of dyslexia and dysgraphia.

At Speak Listen Learn, our speech pathologists are trained to assess and diagnose specific learning disabilities in these areas. However, we generally recommend working alongside a psychologist to gain a more complete understanding of your child’s cognitive skills, academic profile, attention, and any other contributing factors.

Together, this collaborative approach helps build a full picture of your child’s strengths and needs. We then tailor therapy using evidence-based strategies to target decoding, spelling, comprehension, written expression, and any underlying language difficulties that may be present.

What Intervention Approaches Do You Use?

Our approach to literacy intervention is always evidence-based, structured, and individualised to meet your child’s unique needs.

We target all the essential components of effective literacy instruction, including:

  • Phonemic awareness: The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in words
  • Explicit, systematic phonics instruction: Teaching sound–letter relationships in a clear, sequenced way
  • Spelling and morphology: Understanding how words are built and applying spelling patterns and rules
  • Reading fluency: Developing smooth, accurate, and expressive reading
  • Vocabulary and comprehension: Building language skills to support understanding and engagement with texts

We also address any underlying language difficulties that often occur alongside reading and writing challenges, taking a holistic and integrated approach to support your child’s learning.

Our speech pathologists are trained in a range of evidence-based literacy programs, including:

  • Sounds-Write
  • Orton-Gillingham approaches
  • Read3
  • Other structured literacy programs backed by current research

We carefully tailor interventions based on your child’s profile, learning style, and goals.

Next Steps

We understand that concerns about your child’s reading, spelling, or writing can be stressful, especially when it’s hard to know what’s expected at their age or how best to support them.

At Speak Listen Learn, we’ll work with you to understand your child’s learning profile, identify any areas of difficulty, and develop a literacy support plan that’s evidence-based, achievable, and tailored to your child’s strengths and needs.

Whether your child is just beginning to show signs of difficulty or has a diagnosed learning difference, we’re here to provide clear guidance and practical support.
